While our family isn't what you'd call super crunchy "granola," we do strive to make wise decisions in our living. We are a family that lives off the land to an extent, but we are also a very busy family. That means, in day in day out living, we do our best, which sometimes is milking our cow every day and putting up lots of fresh veggis; and then sometimes it's grabbing fast food on the way to a ball game.
With all of that being said, most of our efforts at living a natural life are rooted not only in our desire to be healthy, but also in a desire for our children to see what pleasure can derive from hard work and determination. We want them to know the satisfaction of chopping firewood, and in turn seeing how it can help keep our home warm in winter (along with cook our meals sometimes). We want them to watch with joy as they plant seeds in the ground and in turn help us gather veggis that feed us all year. We want them to know the pleasure of having yummy, fresh butter and milk from our own cow, to enjoy. The lack of hormones, and healthfulness of fresh milk are added benefits. We want them to know the joys of raising chickens, ducks, cows, and whatever other animals we add to the crew. It's our goal for them to realize that there is a certain delight and reward in working hard and seeing results.
We aren't hard lined on this topic. We obviously try to avoid things that we know make our children act or feel terrible or things that we think are just bad choices for our family. Other than that, we simply do our best.
